Why Am I?

“Mother,” I ask, watching her tired eyes scan the glittering heavens. “Why am I scared?”

“My dear child.” She replies as she wraps me in her arms, the warmth from her body enveloping itself tightly around me. “You have lived many lives and will live many more.”

Above us the stars glitter like a thousand fireflies as her melodious voice falls from her lips. “You are scared because you are brave.”

“Aunty,” I ask, watching the sunlight shimmer across her smile as she looks to the tops of the trees. “Why am I angry?”

“My gentle niece.” She replies as she places a soft kiss on my forehead, the calmness from her lips cascading through me. “You have lived many lives and will live many more.”

Around us the trees rustle as the wind swirls through our hair. “You are angry because you are kind.”

“Sister,” I ask, watching her dark hair caress her soft cheeks. “Why am I sad?”

“My sweet sister.” She replies gripping my hands in hers and looking deep into my eyes. “You have lived many lives and you will live many more.”

Below us the sheets tangle with our toes as we pull one another close. “I cannot tell you why you are sad for that is why you are here.”
