We Are Alike

My mother’s eyes are blue like the sky,

Clear and honest but true.

They glitter with sunshine when she smiles.

My mother’s hair used to be dark,

Curly and thick but beautiful.

Time has taken the color from it.

My father’s smile is bright like the sun,

Radiant and dazzling but warm.

It glimmers with joy when he laughs.

My father’s hands used to be strong,

Sturdy and powerful but kind.

Time has taken the energy from them.

I see my mother’s eyes in my oldest brother,

Clear blue irises that glitter just the same,

Only they turn a silvery grey when clouds fill his head.

He has my father’s hands as well,

Able to work on the most intimate of faults,

Dependable as my father’s once were.

I see my father’s smile in my older brother,

A bright and radiant grin that glimmers just the same,

Only it darkens when night falls in his mind.

He has my mother’s hair as well,

As dark and as rich as the earth,

Beautiful as my mother’s once was.

I see myself in my parents too,

From the curve of my mother’s lips,

To the depth of my father’s gaze.

We are each alike in form,

But also alike in essence.
